Pre-Trip Preparations
Examine methods used to develop a pre-trip plan for a safe, enjoyable backcountry wilderness excursion
• Calculate an appropriate route that suites the needs and budget of the participants
• Translate topographical maps in to a usable route plan
• Differentiate types of equipment and how they apply to specific trip outlines
• Create a trip action plan
• Understand the importance of creating evacuation routes
Packing for Trip
Formulate a strong understanding of equipment selection and appropriate menu planning and food packing methods
• Understand different types of packs used to transport gear into the backcountry
• Utilize appropriate repair and first aid kits
• Compare different methods used in packing and storing food
• Prepare and utilize checklists
Backcountry Safety
Predict potential backcountry safety issues and calculate methods used in dealing with wilderness issues
• Examine different ways in treating water for consumption in remote locations
• Recognize potential issues and their treatments before they become larger problems
• Discuss ways to deal with unwanted animal encounters
• Interpret changing weather conditions and apply appropriate action plans
